There are Trail Angels and there are heros. Today I have met three Super Hero Trail Angels! I have been humbled by their graciousness, their wonderful hearts and the kindness that they have bestowed upon me this afternoon. I really don’t even know where to start. I posted a picture this afternoon of the sign leaving Tennessee and entering Virginia. That sign was three and a half miles away from Damascus on the trail. With approximately 2 miles left to hike into Damascus a man suddenly comes out of the woods out of nowhere and welcomes me to Virginia. He takes my photo with his phone and tells me it is all downhill from here. He walks toward me and asked me if he could carry my pack for me. I really didn’t know what to think or say except “who are you?” He stated that people around here call him 220. He took my pack and hiked along with me the two miles into town. After about a half mile or so I asked him what his first name was, having absolutely no idea who this Trail Angel was! He paused for a moment and softly said Kyle. Oh my, I asked if he was Kyle Kirby? He didn’t really want to tell me but finally admitted he was. Kyle started the hike from Springer Mountain & fully intended to hike from Georgia to Maine for the “Friends of Barnabus Foundation.” His knees gave out on him and has seeked medical attention since coming off the trail. Along our two mile hike into town he explained the purpose of his journey and how it came to be. Kyle has so much metal in his body that I could not imagine someone in his physical condition trying to hike the 2,200 miles of the Appalachian Trail. He is one of the most determined individuals I have ever had the pleasure of meeting! We hiked to a cabin they had rented for the next two days where I will be sleeping in a real bed! They treated me to supper tonight and have shared so many stories of their work in Honduras. These three men have some of the most heart warming stories I have ever heard! I will be taking a “Zero” tomorrow meaning I will be hiking zero miles. I have truly met three of God’s most wonderful Angels He has placed on this earth!
