‘The Journey of a Mustard Seed’

‘The Journey of a Mustard Seed’

I have lived on this earth for sixty years. I have been blessed beyond measure over the course of that sixty years by friends, family and most of all, by God! But never in my entire life have I experienced a journey like the one that just transpired over the past six months. It was a journey of faith and endurance that truly came from the heart. It was a journey of a “Mustard Seed” walking side by side with God.
I became friends with over 3,000 people from around the world, and each of you inspired me to trudge on. You encouraged me with your warm hearts and you picked me up when I was down. Together we hiked over 2,200 miles for a cause and that cause was to touch the lives of children both in our local communities as well as the poor children of Honduras. Together we helped raise over $50,000 for two magnificent organizations, to make a difference in the lives of children!!!

So what now? Does it stop here? I certainly hope not! I hope this journey has inspired you half as much as it did me!!! There is so much more to do by continuing to touch the lives of others. It’s why we exist, why God placed each of us on this planet!
I look so forward to finally having the privilege to meet many of you who hopefully are able to make it to the gathering on Sunday afternoon, Sept. 4th beginning at 1:00. And I also hope that many of you will continue to stay in touch through my future posts of “Journeys Along Hazel Creek!”

Hiking the Appalachian Trail has truly been a journey of a lifetime! A journey I will not soon forget. I give all of the glory to God of being able to make such a journey, to experience so many of His wonders, and to have the pleasure of meeting so many wonderful people like you! May God bless each of you for the part you played in making this journey a dream come true!!!

1 mile from my final destination!

Climbing Katahdin!!! I put my hiking poles in my pack long ago and I have been climbing boulders for some time now. 1 mile from my final destination! But it is not about the destination, but about the journey. The peak is in site!!! There are no words that can describe what I am feeling right now!!!

Steve, as I read your post last night and realized that you would complete your journey today I begin to think of what an accomplishment you have achieved! I couldn’t help but relate it to what Jesus done for each and every one of us. He GAVE his life so that we may in return spend eternity in heaven. What a sacrifice! As I thought about your journey, I thought of your sacrifice for others over the past six months of your life. So many have been touched, encouraged and blessed by your journey. Then upon your return as you continue to establish the Big Brother Big Sister program in Graham County so many more will be helped all because of your willingness to GIVE! I am so thankful for what you mean to my family and I thankful for people like you that are willing to sacrifice your time in order to help so many others. I am certain that even though your journey will come to a close today on the Appalachian Trail you will continue to trek through life being the selfless individual that you are. I am inspired and challenged to do more for others in my own life. I am proud of what you have accomplished and proud to call you my friend.

THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh, and yes my goal to raise $22,500 was reached yesterday before reaching the end of the 100 Mile Wilderness!!!!! I cannot say thank you enough to Jim Erik, Steve Glover, Judy Hogan, Sarita Harjo, Stephen & Gail Findlay, Ellen & Charles Snodgrass, Thomas Haser, JohnandLaura Lankford, John Costa, Judy Norton, Barry & Amy Hulsey, Joseph Caron and David Carson for believing in this cause for Big Brothers/Big Sisters and putting us over the top of our goal. There are the two fundraisers that will take place upon my return, the BBQ Dinner and Jenean Hornbuckle‘s limited edition painting, so let’s set the bar even higher & see if we can reach the $25,000 mark!!! Won’t you help provide HOPE in the lives of children in Graham & Swain Counties who just need a little encouragement in their lives???!!! Thank you SOOOO MUCH to those who have already contributed to the “Hiking For Hope” campaign!!!!!!

Well, here we are six months to the day since I departed Springer Mountain hiking toward Mount Katahdin in Maine! 2,183.9 miles behind me with a mere 5.8 miles to the peak of this beast of a mountain & then the same amount back to the base. I cannot even begin to describe the emotions going on within my heart & soul tonight knowing that this journey will be coming to a close at the end of the day tomorrow. But it will only be the end of my hike, as there has been so much that I have gained throughout this journey that will go with me for the rest of my days on this earth! I will attempt the Live Facebook Video as I am approaching the summit, but please understand that there is no way to give you a specific time as this particular 5.8 mile climb is predicted to take between 4-5 hours for a thru-hiker who has 2,183 miles on their legs! I will be beginning my hike after checking in around 7:45-8:00 a.m. Today’s rain is now over and the weather forecast is perfect for tomorrow so the views should be fabulous. I ask that you also understand that this will be a particularly emotional time for me after arriving at the summit so I will attempt to provide as much video as my emotions can possibly handle. I hope and pray that each of you that have followed my journey have enjoyed the ride and will take something away from this experience that you feel might have an impact on your life. More about that and a summary of this “journey of a lifetime” after the summit is complete tomorrow!!! For now, goodnight, sweet dreams and may God grant you a restful night’s rest!

“Mustard Seed”

p.s. “Sunshine” I hope you are still wearing the “Believe” bracelet, because tomorrow
“I Believe” it will finally happen, and I will finally reach Mount Katahdin!!! And “I Know” who is responsible for making this “Dream Of A Lifetime Come True!”

Sunset at Rainbow Lake two nights ago

Sunset at Rainbow Lake two nights ago where I camped before making the 21 mile journey out of the 100 Mile Wilderness. What an appropriate name! I’m going to miss Maine and the abundance of water. There are over 3,400 lakes in Maine and many of what they call ponds I would call lakes they are so large!!!
